Cardiff Devils vs Nottingham Panthers 02/02/11

Devils 6, Panthers 5 - OT Final

If you ventured down to the Cardiff Arena to watch Devils take on the Panthers, then you were in for a nail biting game.  With an overtime win, the Devils only just manage to cling on to those precious two points.

With no major penalties throughout the game, the only think keeping the fans going were the eleven collective goals scored.  It was Cardiff who opened the score sheet, at 3.33 in the 1st period, coming from Mark Smith, assists going to Captain Ryan Finnerty and Forwar Jon Pelle.

Even with the home advantage and getting the first goal, Cardiff didn't end the period on a good note.  With Nottingham scoring on Stevie Lyle (who saved 21 out of 26 shots against him) three times, with the goals coming from Beauregard (6.16), Lachowicz (12.40) and Hereema (15.07), the first period ended with the score 3-1 Panthers.

Three minutes into the second, Cardiff were three goals down, after Panthers' Myers put the puck past Lyle.  But the Devils weren't going down without a fight.  Six minutes after Nottingham's fourth goal, at 9.11, Cardiff brought the difference back down to two, when Jon Pelle got his first of the night, assists going to Craig Weller and Stuart MacRae, on the powerplay.  Cardiff's second powerplay goal came at 16.36 in the 2nd, from Weller, assists from Jon Pelle (who had an amazing night) and Stuart MacRae, making it a one-goal game.  Score at the end of the second: 4-3.

The third period finally saw the Devils outscoring the Panthers.  Nottingham scored first, at 4.32, but Cardiff were determined.  Two brilliant goals from Jon Pelle, one at 5.00 and the other at 9.43, leveled out the score, forcing overtime.

So with the score level at five a piece, the crowd waited with baited breath to see who would get the win.  And they didn't have to wait long; On the powerplay, at 1.10, Jon Pelle scored his fourth of night, earning Cardiff the two desperately needed points!
