Cardiff Devils @ Belfast Giants (EL/CC) 05/02/11

Devils 0, Giants 4 - Final

What a time to be a Devils fan!  One minute Cardiff are on the up, the next they are being shutout.  Where's the team that won twenty-one games in a row?  We need them now!

To be honest, it wasn't looking that bad at the end of the first.  With a scoreless first, the Red Army weren't too worried.  And the score wasn't too degrading at the end of the second; only 1-0 Belfast.  Cardiff could easily come back from that.

It all went downhill in the third.  Cardiff couldn't even put the puck in the net on the powerplay.  Instead, Belfast scored two shorthanded goals, two minutes apart.  It's almost like Cardiff were asleep!

Shots weren't in the favor of Cardiff either.  Stevie Lyle managed to stop 35 out of 39 shots, whereas the Giants' tender, Stephen Murphy, stopped all 23 of Cardiff's attempts.

More bad news for Cardiff, when it was announced No. 16, Tylor Michel, was to receive a 5-match ban.  Michel, who received 19 PIMs in the Giants' game, has received the discipline for a sucker punch on a Belfast forward.  But Michel wasn't the worst of the Devils for PIMs; No. 26, Brad Voth (who is well known for racking up the PIMs), managed to accumulate 30 PIMs all by himself.  Both players mentioned above dropped their gloves at one point.

All in all, not the best game for Cardiff.  To make it worse, it was the first leg of the Challenge Cup Semi-Final as well.  Oh well, maybe we can do better next time.
