Cardiff Devils vs Coventry Blaze 19/11/11

Devils 4, Blaze 1 - Final

Hockey night in Cardiff and the boys welcomed the Coventry Blaze to the BBT, for the first game of a double-headed weekend.  After Saturday's game, the Devils followed their rivals up to the Skydome to play them in the second game of the weekend.  With this game begin a stretch of three games in five days for the Devils, they were desperate to get it off to a good start.

The game started with end-to-end action, and some hard hits from Cardiff's finest.  With Blaze new boy Park Woo-Sang on the ice, our own Max Birbraer took it upon himself to welcome the South Korean to the BBT.  The Blaze followed this up with two penalties, giving Cardiff a 5-on-3 opportunity.  Unfortunately, the Blaze were prepared defensively, successfully killing off both penalties.  But the lack of success on the powerplay didn't hold the Devils back when the game returned to even strength.  At 7.15, powerhouse foward Phil Hill received the puck from Matzka and Voth, before sending it passed Blaze netminder Peter Hirsch to put Cardiff ahead by one.  More end-to-end action followed with a couple of penalties for each team.  Although both teams had some great chances, the goal light didn't light up again until 10:44, when Max Birbraer doubled Cardiff's lead to 2-0.

With ten minutes left of the first period, things were started to heat up.  We all know that you cannot have a Cardiff/Coventry game without some physical play.  We have already had Brian Jurynec trying to wind up our very own Brad Voth; when Voth didn't react to the instigator, Jurynec moved on to someone who would fight back.  At 13:12, Devils' head coach Gerad Adams dropped the gloves with Jurynec, both earning themselves five for fighting.  With the Devils already on fire, this round of handbags seemed to set them blazing.  Within a minute later, Mark Richardson had added a third Devils' goal, with Hill adding his second of the night to the total not even thirty seconds later.  Peter Hirsch managed to pull out some saves in the last couple of minutes, before the period finished 4-0 Devils.

After some incredible play by the Devils' defense in the first period, mainly from young Brit Josh Batch and forward/defensemen Scott Dobben, it was now time for the Blaze to step up their defense.  With Hirsch now finding his feet, or his gloves and pads, the Devils were having to try extra hard to get the puck passed him.  Before any more goals could be added to the Cardiff tally, Tim Burrows was sent to the box for intereference, giving Coventry the advantage.  Unfortunately for the Blaze, the Devils stepped up their special units and were defending well, even getting lucky enough for some shorthanded chances, though nothing came of them.  Despite having a worrying first period, Hirsch seemed to pick himself up during the intermission as he made his way through the second, stopping all Devils' chances on goal.  Lyle also kept up his stellar performance, not allowing any of the Coventry chances to get passed him.  Score at the end of the second, 4-0 Devils.

Now I don't know what was said in the away dressing room during the second intermission, but Thompson must have made an extreme impression on his players; just 4:40 in the third and the Blaze managed to pull a goal back, coming from Robert Farmer.  With the score up to 4-1, we saw a couple of penalties, before goal scorers Birbraer and Farmer got into it, both earning themselves five for fighting, with Max getting the instigator and Farmer getting two for interference.  David Phillips also got two for delay of game, giving the Devils a 4-on-3 advantage.  With nothing coming from this extended penalty, there were a couple of other penalties but nothing could help the Blaze now.  They played well for the last five minutes but the game finished 4-1 Devils.

Cardiff Devils vs Braehead Clan 13/11/11

Devils 3, Clan 4 - OT Final

Coming off a brilliant away win over the league-leading Belfast Giants, the Cardiff Devils landed back in Wales just in time to take on the Braehead Clan.  Last time these two teams played each other was on a double-header weekend, seeing Cardiff in Braehead on the Saturday -where they suffered a disappointing 3-1 loss- and Braehead visit the Welsh Capital on the Sunday, where Cardiff got revenge in full with an incredible 5-2 win.  Will the tables turn and the Clan dominate in the BBT?

Just like every sporting event yesterday, the BBT served a minutes silence before getting down to business.  It was slow to start with the Devils, getting an early penalty for too many men (served by Jeff Pierce at 2:35) but they held their heads up and killed off the unfortunate penalty.  It took a little bit of time but the Devils managed some nice end to end action, with both goaltenders making good saves and with certain players, cough Frank cough, throwing some hard hits. The momentum started to pick up and Clan goaltender Jaakko Suomalainen was forced to make some super saves, with captain Stuart MacRae missing an open net in the middle.  The final minutes of the first period saw a couple of Devils' penalties, with the Clan spending all of the powerplay in the Devils' zone, testing Stevie Lyle and his defense.  Luckily our Welsh wall held strong and the period ended 0-0.

Unfortunately, due to a power problem, the second period had a delayed start.  Everyone was definitely powered up for the action to start though, keeping themselves amused with renditions of the Mexican Wave to keep the spirits up.  Once the lights were back on, the Devils went straight back to business, with Hill getting a penalty for interference.  Despite immense pressure from the Clan's PP unit, the Devils kill off the penalty and return the favor tenfold when the Clan's Kevin Phillips was sent to the box.  Although the penalty had finished, the Devils continued with their pressure and managed to find a hole, with Jeff Pierce volleying the puck passed Suomalainen to put the Devils on the scoreboard.

With the score leaning in the Devils' favor, they seemed to get their confidence back; or, at their least their physicality.  Within 60 seconds, Hill was back in the box and Frank was thrown out for a dangerous check from behind, receiving a match penalty in the process.  With almost two minutes of 5-on-3 powerplay, it was clear that the Clan were definitely at the advantage and they used it well.... at 34:16 the Clan equalize with a powerplay goal, coming from Mike Bayrack.  However, the Devils were not to be beaten.  In the following minute, the Devils went back ahead with a shorthanded goal from Max Birbraer.  The Devils looked to have their magic back, when captain Stuart MacRae also tipped the puck over the line; unfortunately, Ref Carson called offside and the goal was disallowed.  Braehead used this to their advantage and came back to score one of their own, making it 2-2, Mike Bayrack getting his second of the night.

The events of the second period seemed to have taken an effect on Cardiff, as, just 1:58 into the third period, Mike Bayrack claimed the puck and scored his third goal of the night, earning himself a hat-trick.  For the following ten minutes, neither team were taking clear shots, until, at 54:32, Ben Davies got hold of the puck and leveled the score.  With just under seven minutes to play, the score was tided at 3-3, with both teams desperate to get that winning goal.  Despite all their efforts, the game went to overtime.  The five minutes of the OT period were close, with both teams coming extremely close several times but in the final minute of OT, the Clan clinched the game, earning themselves a four-point weekend, after an incredible 10-1 win of fellow Celts, the Fife Flyers.

Putting the past behind us, the Devils will now spend the week preparing for their double-header against the Coventry Blaze. The last time these two teams met finished in a 6-1 home win for the Devils.  Make sure you're down at the BBT on Saturday, for the 7pm face off, and that you follow along on the MNL if you can't make it to Coventry on Sunday!  Let's Go Devils!

Cardiff Devils @ Belfast Giants 12/11/11

Devils 2, Giants 1 - Final

It was clear that the results from last weekends games, especially the 3-1 defeat over Nottingham on Saturday, has definitely boosted the Devils' confidence.  With Mark Smith being the only scratch, on account of  recovering from concussion-like symptoms, everything was looking good for the Welsh side as they prepared to take on the league-leading Giants.

As we all know, it is a weekend for remembering and so, the players and fans took a minute out before the game started to applaud for a loyal Giants' fan who had recently passed on.  Once the applause had died down, it was down to business.  After losing to the Giants twice in as many games played against them, the Devils were gunning for revenge.  They came out fighting, with some serious end-to-end action, but were struggling to get the puck on the net.  With the shots on goal finally starting to climb, the Devils were playing well but just could not capitalize.  Both teams threw some big hits and some even bigger shots, with Devils' Matzka and Dobben going close and the Giants' Dowd challenging Stevie Lyle, but neither team could seal the deal.

It was clearly tense in the Odyssey Arena, with neither side managed to get ahead.  At 7:40, Max Birbraer was sent to the box for tripping and the Giants threw their-all into the powerplay, getting some great chances but failing to make more of it.  Devils managed a couple of shorthanded breakaways that came to nothing, as well as killing the penalty.  But it seemed that the Devils' fire had been ignited.  At 9:26, Phil Hill put the puck behind Stephen Murphy, with the only assist going to Scott Matzka.  In true Devils' fashion, they followed up with a penalty (S Smith-slashing-11:50).  Once again the Devils' PK unit held strong and when Giants' Dowd was called up for holding, the Devils PP unit put in a good performance, though they failed to capitalize on the man advantage.  A couple of Devils' penalties followed throughout the remaining minutes of the first, but the score remained the same.  End of first, 1-0 Devils.

Despite the Devils leading 1-0, the Giants came out with the advantage - just over a minute of powerplay action.  True to their form throughout the first period, the Giants threw their all at the net but both netminder and PK unit were holding steady, with a few shorthanded attempts getting throughout.  On the other hand, they piled on the pressure on the PP but unfortunately had as much luck as the Irish.  Both teams were starting to get a bit antsy and the hits were coming thick and fast.  Due to this, the Welsh side may have been getting sloppy, with Giants getting passed them to take shots and make good plays.  Captain Stuart MacRae was sent to the box for slashing and the Giants did not fail to use this advantage.  Jeff Mason leveled the score at 25:49.  But the Devils were determined; at 26:40, Kenton Smith put Devils ahead once more, on a delayed penalty.

The rest of the second period followed with penalties.  At one point, it looked like Belfast were going to equalize, but Frank the Tank managed to get in the way, getting called up for interference in the process.  Second finishes 2-1 Devils.

With the third came a new kind of desperation for the Giants, who were trying everything to get that equalizing goal.  Unfortunately for them, Lyle and the defense held strong.  Down the other end, Cardiff were also failing to widen the deficit.  With no penalties and no goals in the final twenty minutes, the game finished 2-1 Devils.

Making sure to follow along with the Devils as they take on the Clan at the earlier time of 6:30pm, in the BBT; Let's Go Devils!

Cardiff Devils vs Dundee Stars 30/10/11

Devils 2, Stars 3 - SO Final

Coming off a victory over the Coventry Blaze last night, the Cardiff Devils were ready to face the Dundee Stars.  Hoping for a four point weekend, the boys were raring for a good game and a good result.

The teams came out fighting.  Not only were both teams sent to the box for several minor indiscretions, such as holding, slashing, etc, power-forward Max Birbraer managed to get himself a ten-minute misconduct (19:58).   With all the power-plays going, someone was sure to put the puck in the back of the net.  Unfortunately for the Red Army, it was the Stars that managed to capitalize on the man advantage.  At 12:05, Brennan Turner, who saw more of the penalty box than the ice the last time these two teams met last week, shot the puck passed Stevie Lyle, scoring the only goal of the period.

The intense play continued through into the second period.  With more penalties being handed out, it was rare that either team at a full five players on the ice at any one time.  In addition to the penalties, Brennan Turner also extended the Stars lead to two (30:02).  Desperate to remain in the game, the Devils fought back and Scott Matzka managed to get one in the back of the net (39:54).  Both teams continued to try and get another goal before the end of the period, but all that was awarded was a ten-minute misconduct for Chris Frank.  End of second period, 2-1 Stars.

Into the third and the Devils were desperate to level the score.  So desperate in fact, that it only took 42 seconds for Scott Matzka to find his way through Dundee's defense and put the puck in the back of the net.  With the score level, both teams were determined to get the next goal.  Throughout their fight to get the goal, Chris Frank got himself a holding minor, plus a Game for abuse of official; Hutchins and Dobben also got minor penalties.  The powerplays did not help either team and the period finished 2-2.  The Stars go into the OT period with 1:53 powerplay time, as Dobben was sent to the box at 59:53.

Despite the eagerness both teams had to put rubber in the net, neither team succeeded in scoring the OT goal, so the game went to shootout.  First up, Max Birbraer misses, but his Dundee counterpart, Brent Hughes scores.  Devils' next shooter Scott Matzka also misses.  Much to the disappointment of the Devils, the next Star shooter, Lee Mitchell, scores, and Dundee wins.

Devils' next game is on Saturday, against the Nottingham Panthers, at the BBT.  Make sure you're there supporting the boys!  Let's Go Devils!

Cardiff Devils vs Coventry Blaze (CC) 29/10/11

Devils 6, Blaze 1 - Final

It's Saturday night and the Cardiff Devils welcome the Coventry Blaze to the BBT tonight.  As we all know, Devils/Blaze match-ups are always interesting, and this one didn't disappoint!  Seven goals throughout the sixty minutes, plus a whole load of penalties, everyone in the BBT was buzzing.

The action was non-stop from the beginning.  With the penalties coming thick and fast, the penalty units for both teams had to keep their heads up.  The Devils' penalty kill had a great night, not letting Coventry score any powerplay goals.  Instead, the Devils first goal, scored by Brad Voth, was a powerplay goal (7:27)!  During the first, Coventry also managed to get one on the board, but were unsuccessful in stopping Man of the Match Jeff Pierce from scoring his first of the night.  The score at the end of the first was 2-1 Cardiff.

The second was a bit quieter than the first, with only a couple of penalties and only goal.  Although, it is said that the goal that put Cardiff two goals ahead, is a contender for the goal of the year, with MOM Jeff Pierce doing a full 360 degree turn before depositing the puck in the back of the net.  Goal scored at 28:29, with the help of Adams and Frank.  End of Second, 3-1 Devils.

Finally, it was time for the last twenty minutes.  Just like when they played Dundee last Saturday, Cardiff did not slow their work effort, just because they were in front.  Although the boys didn't score five goals in the last period, they did manage three, securing a 6-1 victory.  The first of the three came from captain Stuart MacRae (49:02), followed by Kenton Smith with his first of the season (56:34).  The final Devils' goal was scored by assistant coach Scott Matzka (58:47), rounding off the scoring and bringing in those much needed two points.  With a win under the belts, the Devils go second in their CC group, four points behind Nottingham with a game in hand.

Be sure to follow the boys when they play in Dundee tomorrow night!  If you can't get up to Scotland, then be sure to follow the MNL (http://www.the-inferno.co.uk/mnl/) for all the news from the Devils.  Let's Go Devils!

Tuesday 25 October 2011

Cardiff Devils @ Sheffield Steelers (CC) 23/10/11

Devils 3, Steelers 5 - Final

Despite the crushing victory over the Dundee Stars the previous night, the Cardiff Devils lost out to the Sheffield Steelers in their most recent Challenge Cup match-up.  With Captain Stuart MacRae and defensemen Mark Smith still missing from the line-up, the Devils ended up on the wrong side of a 5-3 final score.

The first period saw a variety of penalties, including a 2 + 10 received by Chris Frank for a check from behind.  We also saw a goal from Max Birbraer (04:12), countered by two from Sheffield.  The first came from Jeff Legue (06:49) and the second from MOM Colt King (14:11).

The second saw two goals for each side, with the score going up to 4-3 Sheffield.  The first goal of the period came from Lee Esders (24:33).  Obviously not liking the fact that Sheffield now had a two goal lead, the Devils rallied to score, with Scott Dobben putting one away, unassisted (32:25).  Jeff Legue put the difference back to two with his second of the night and Brad Voth added Cardiff's third (38:48) to finish the period 4-3 Steelers.

Despite the Devils' best efforts they couldn't get the puck behind DeCaro in the third, and, with Colt King scoring his second of the night (58:22), the Steelers secured a win, final score 5-3.

Make sure you get your tickets for this Saturday's match-up at the BBT, when the Coventry Blaze come to town.  When the Devils and the Blaze met last, in the Sky Dome, the Devils came away with a 2-0 win.  Get down to the BBT and see if they can do it again.  Let's Go Devils!

Cardiff Devils vs Dundee Stars 22/10/11

Devils 7, Stars 3 - Final

Looks like the Cardiff Devils have seen the (goal) light and showed the Dundee Stars what hockey players are made of in Cardiff.  With a collective total of ten goals throughout the sixty minutes, plus a certain giant's first fight of the season, the BBT was the place to be on Saturday night.

During the first we saw the first of the seven Devils' goals, coming from Man of the Match Max Birbraer, from Davies and Pierce (19:19).  Also throughout the first, we saw the Stars hit the penalty box three times, Turner for slashing, Wishart for hooking and Zarb with a 2 + 10 for a check from behind.

Moving into the second and it was double time!  Double the amount of goals and double the amount of penalties.  Included in those penalties were Gerad Adams and Brennan Turner, who dropped the gloves at 22:07.  The action died down for a bit, before Jeff Pierce lit the lamp, doubling the Devils' lead (35:07).  The Stars managed to bring the difference back to one, after Dan Ceman put one on the board (38:10).

Now the third is where it gets really interesting.  This time last week, the Devils let it slip, at home, in the third, with Belfast finishing the game 6-2.  This week it was a completely different story.  Five goals in twenty minutes!  The first, giving the Devils a 3-1 lead, came from Jeff Pierce (40:34).  MOM Max Birbraer made it 4-1 when he scored on a penalty shot (46:14).  With the Devils already 4-1 up, Pierce made the night even better when he got his hat-trick, making it 5-1.  AJ McLean got one in for Dundee, making it 5-2, but Tim Burrows and Luke Piggot cemented the Devils' win with one each.

With the Devils' scoring finished it was time for one last piece of action.  At 56:51, Canadian giant Brad Voth dropped the gloves for the first time this season, going against Brennan Turner, who was given a game penalty after receiving two majors in one game (after a fight with Adams in the second).  Voth also received a 2-minute minor for boarding and 2 + 10 for instigating.

In the dying minutes of the game, Dundee made a last ditch attempt, with Alan Matur giving the Stars their third goal, but the game finished 7-3.

Sunday 16 October 2011

Hereford United vs Stockport County 15/01/11

Hereford 3, Stockport 0 - Final

After a long and difficult season, Hereford United have finally given their fans something to cheer about; their first home win of the season.  After three successful away wins, Hereford continue their streak on home turf, in front of a home crowd of 3154 (including 334 away supporters).

If you weren't there, you will be kicking yourself.  For most of the ninety minute game, the Bulls dominated.  There was excitement from start to finish... literally.  Three minutes in, Hereford were on the offensive.  Stuart Fleetwood, who worked hard from the start of the match until he was subbed in the 89th minutes (for Bauza), crossed the ball from the right, hoping on of the Bull's forwards wold got a foot on it.  Instead, Andy Hall, a Stockport defender, put it in the back of the net - even though he wasn't being pressured and could have left it.  1-0 Hereford.

Playing up front for Hereford were Mathieu 'Beast' Manset and Stuart Fleetwood.  In their last fifteen games, the pair had managed an impressive twenty goals and were hoping to increase that number against Stockport.  The tally went up to twenty-one in the 26th minute, when the Beast put a powerful shot in the back of the net... increasing Hereford's lead to 2-0.

Hereford had a chance to increase that lead further, when McQuilkin received a free kick, due to a foul from Stephen Husbands (who was sent off after two yellow cards).  Unfortunately, the ball skimmed over the bar, the score remaining 2-0.  But Stockport were now down to ten men and with a strong wind against them, they were going to struggle in the second half.

As predicted, Stockport struggled, failing to capitalize on any of the chances they were given.  Manset, who received the Man of Match award, also had several chances in the second half, but failed to succeed, and was substituted in favor of Canham in the 76th minute.  Exhausted from the amount of effort used in an amazing display of football (one which deserved the Man of the Match award if Manset hadn't been on the pitch), Stuart Fleetwood followed, in the 84th minute, being replaced by Bauza.

Although having only been on the pitch for a matter of minutes, and with only five minutes left on the clock, Bauza made his presence known by extending Hereford's lead to 3-0.  The Bulls managed to hand on for the final minutes, finishing the game with a final score of 3-0

Cardiff Devils vs Belfast Giants 15/10/11

Devils 2, Giants 6 - Final

It's hockey night in the BBT and the Giants are in town to take on your Cardiff Devils!  Coming off a three point weekend, the Devils were looking to add those precious two points to their tally.  Unfortunately, as he is still recovering from an injury sustained in training, Mark Smith did not ice for the Devils, and the Giants were missing Brock McBride and Jeremy Rebek, although former-Devils Jon Pelle did ice for the Giants.

This was the second meeting in Cardiff for these two teams, with the first ending in a 4-3 shootout victory for the visitors, and they were ready and raring to go at the beginning of this rematch.  So ready in fact, that player/assistant coach Scott Matzka and Giants' forward Derek LeBlanc got up close and personally before the puck was even dropped; no penalties came from the game of handbags.  Devils' captain got the game going with a delay of game penalty just before the minute mark, but the Devils managed to kill the penalty.  After about five minute of 'good feisty' play, with chances coming for both sides, Devils' power-forward Phil Hill was sent to the box for a holding penalty.  The Giants capitalized on the man-advantage, a powerplay goal being scored by former-Devil Jon Pelle.  It isn't until about ten minutes when the Devils equalize with a goal from Canadian Brad Voth.  End of first period, 1-1.

Second period, and it started with a bang.  Thirty-four seconds, Jon Pelle added his second goal of the night, doubling the Giants' lead.  The Devils were desperate to level the score, taking shot after shot, but not being able to capitalize.  Half way through the period, the Giants were awarded a penalty shot, due to goaltender interference, which was saved by Stevie Lyle.  The action then went up the ice, and the Devils scored the equalizing goal, coming off Scott Dobben's stick.  But, luck just wasn't on the Devils' side tonight, as the Giants managed to put two more behind Lyle before the period was over, the first coming from Jeff Mason and the other giving Jon Pelle his hat-trick.  Second period ended 4-2 Giants.  The third saw two more Giants' goals, from LeBlanc and Keefe and a range of minor penalties.  Final score 6-2 Giants.

The next home game is on Saturday, against Dundee, FO at 7pm.  Get down to the BBT and cheer the boys on!  Let's Go Devils!

Sunday 9 October 2011

Cardiff Devils vs Sheffield Steelers 09/10/11

Devils 2, Steelers 3 - SO Final

Back in Cardiff tonight and the Devils welcome former Devils Ryan Finnerty and the Sheffield Steelers into the BBT.  The last time the Steelers were in town, Cardiff managed a 4-0 win, but, on the return trip the next day, lost out on a four point weekend with a 5-3 defeat.  Everyone was hoping for a repeat of the first game!

Throughout the first period, both Stevie Lyle and John DeCaro saw their fair share of shots.  Devils' 93, Jeff Pierce, was just one of the many attempting to best DeCaro but he was having none of it.  It seemed like our own Stevie Lyle had adopted the same attitude, having no trouble holding the Steelers at bay. The first twenty saw several penalties, three for each side.  Sheffield were penalized for two hooking calls, and a diving call, the last one aimed at ex-Devils' captain Ryan Finnerty.  Cardiff were shorthanded due to a controversial interference call, as well as charging and cross-checking.  Despite the Steelers apparently getting one in the back of the net, the period ended 0-0, as Darnell waves off the only 'goal' of the period.

The second period was slightly more eventful.  Although there were half as many penalties, the scoreboard was lit up three times throughout the twenty minutes.  The first, both of the game and for the Steelers, came from Rodney Sarich, from Tait and Ramsay, who is usually a thorn in the Devils' sides.  The second, following shortly after, was also a Steelers' goal, came from Lee Esders, assists going to Tait and Finnerty.  Finally, the Devils managed to get their first goal of the night, coming from Phil Hill, who also scored the first goal in last night's win over Fife, with help from Adams.  This goal came as a result of an increase in the intensity of play by the Devils, after Player/Coach Gerad Adams called a time out, obviously being disappointed in the play.  It seemed like the pep-talk worked the magic intended as the Devils were a different side.  Unfortunately, DeCaro held strong for the final minutes of the second and the period finished 2-1 Steelers.

Time for the third period and the Devils were determined to level the score.  After nearly a whole period's hard work and determination, Scott Dobben managed to score the equalizer.  With many penalties being called as well, it was an interesting period.  Despite many attempts on goal, for both teams, and the goal light being lit several times behind DeCaro, the period ended 2-2, as Darnell waved several 'goals'.

Into overtime and the play was just as intense.  Frank got himself a 5+game for slashing at Finnerty.  It was said that Finnerty made a comment to cause Frank to lash out; it must have been something major considering the reaction.  Neither could finish the game, even though Sheffield had the advantage and the game went to shootout.

Up for Cardiff were Birbraer, Pierce and MacRae, who all missed their shots.  Up for Sheffield were Ramsay and Birnstill.  Birnstill missed his shot but Ramsay scored his second, meaning that Birbraer would have to score his second to keep the Devils in the game.  Unfortunately Max missed and the Devils lost.  Final score 3-2 Steelers.

Next game at the BBT is on Saturday, against the Belfast Giants.  FO is at 7pm, don't be late to watch the Devils take on former Devils Jon Pelle and the Giants!  Let's Go Devils!

Saturday 8 October 2011

Cardiff Devils @ Fife Flyers 08/10/11

Devils 3, Flyers 1 - End of Second

Just like last Saturday, the Cardiff Devils traveled up to Scotland, this time ready to face the Fife Flyers.  After a not so successful trip last weekend, everyone was hoping that tonight would be different.  Missing from the Devils' line-up tonight is Canadian defensemen Mark Smith, with Scott Makza back in the line-up after missing  the Devils' win over the Braehead Clan on Sunday, in the BBT.  Flyers missing starting goaltender Garrett Zemlak, and defensemen Thomas Muir.

The game started out with end to end action.  Both Stevie Lyle and Flyers' back-up tender Blair Daly saw some shots in the only 10 minutes.  Apart from that, there wasn't much going on, until about the seven minute mark, when Cardiff defensemen Chris Frank was sent to the box for slashing.  Devils killed the penalty and continued with the game... only for Frank to be sent back to the box on an inference call.  This came about when a Flyers' player took a shot, Lyle saved it, and the Flyers' player took a tumble.  Before the two-minute penalty was over, Frank was joined by Jeff Pierce in the box, as the Devils were called up for too many men on the ice.  Although shorthanded the Devils made some excellent plays, with the likes of young Brit Ben Davies coming close to scoring.  Much like with the first penalty, the Devils killed it off and continued on.

Just over five minutes after the last penalty, power forward Phil Hill managed to get one past Daly, who, up until that point, had been staying strong in between the pipes, despite being a back-up goaltender.  Assists went out to Captain Stuart MacRae and Chris Frank, who was well on course for a Gorgie Howe hat-trick; unfortunately we didn't get to see one.  The Devils continued to shoot at the goal, tallying fourteen shots to the Flyers' seven, but Daly held strong for the remainder of the period.  Score at the end of the first, 1-0 Devils.

Into the second, and the Flyers' were desperate to even the score.  They tried taking out key Devils' players, such as Jeff Pierce and Chris Frank, but even this couldn't help.  At 31:49, new signing Josh Batch scored his first goal for the Devils, with the assists going to Brad Voth and Stuart MacRae.  There was a small case of handbags after the goal, but no penalties came of it.  Due to a fumble by the Flyers' goaltender, Jeff Pierce managed to put the Devils up 3-0 all before fifteen minutes had passed.

Despite being down 3-0, Fife weren't giving up.  After many botched attempts, Danny Stewart succeeded in getting his team their first goal, at 38:54.  There were also several minor penalties, two at the same time for Cardiff resulting in a 5-on-3 that gave Fife their goal.  However, this is nothing compared to what was happening in the BBT, where the ENL Devils were playing Invicta.  It was said to be carnage in Cardiff, with fights all over the place, and many players getting thrown out; the second period was abandoned with three minutes left, but those were played after everyone calmed down.  They went straight into third period after playing final three of the second period.  In Fife, the second period ended 3-1 Devils.

After finishing the second period, unlike the ENL Devils, the Cardiff Devils were raring to go when coming out for the third.  Despite this, the Flyers' managed to pull the game back to one goal, courtesy of Mike Hamilton, at 41:09.  There were a few minor penalties throughout the period, but neither side could capitalise on the advantage.  MOM Blair Daly looked like he had seen off the Cardiff Devils, until 53 seconds before the end of the period, when Scott Matzka slid a final Devils' goal passed him, making the final score Devils 4, Flyers 2.

It's nice to see the Devils winning in Scotland!  Let's hope that the long trip home, on the 'blane' as Max calls it, doesn't make the guys too tired to play against the Steelers, in the BBT tomorrow night; FO is at 6pm.  Let's Go Devils!

Sunday 2 October 2011

Cardiff Devils vs Braehead Clan 02/10/11

Devils 5, Clan 2 - Final

Sunday night, and it's time for the Devils to get some revenge on the Braehead Clan, after last night's 3-1 defeat up in Scotland.  With Player/Assistant Coach Scott Matzka missing for the Devils, supposedly with a mild concussion, and Mike Bayrack missing from the Clan's bench, due to visa problems, it was sure to be an interesting game.

The first period didn't get off to the best of starts in the BBT, with some technical problems delaying the FO.  By the time the puck was dropped everyone was anxious to see what was going to happen.  Once play started, the Devils created several changes, getting a few shots on goal, but last night's MOM Jaakko Suomalainen held strong in between the pipes.  In the opening ten minutes, both teams also saw a couple of offsides.

The penalty box also saw some action in the initial twenty minutes.  Starting at 7:14, Braehead had four players sent to the box, Galbraith the first for hooking, followed by Zajac for interference; Tim Wedderburn, who was the other Clan player to earn a penalty in last night's game, followed his teammates with a delay of game call.  At 17:15, both Kyle Bruce and Brad Voth were served penalties, Bruce's for roughing.  Voth's penalty, however, was for a high stick, for which he received five plus a game misconduct.  To combat for this, Jeff Pierce took matters into his own hands and, with the help of Kenton Smith and Stuart MacRae, put the puck in the back of the net.  Score at the end of the first, 1-0 Devils.

Roll on the second period!  After good first period, the Devils came back out after the fifteen minute intermission, ready and raring to go.  And did they ever show who's game it was!  Just 1:06 into the period, Player/Coach Gerad Adams took hold of the puck and blasted it past Clan tender Suomalainen.  With the score now 2-0 Devils, it is possible that Braehead were getting slightly frustrated.  At 25:42, Kyle Bruce was put in the box for roughing, and Jordan Krestanovich followed with two for hooking.  Despite the Clan penalties, the Devils' game continued to flow and Captain Stuart MacRae added the Devils' third goal of the night.  To round of the period, Jeff Pierce scored his second of the night, and Gerad Adams was sent to the box for holding.

Another fifteen minute intermission and the players were back out on the ice, ready for the third period.  The final twenty minutes saw two penalties and three goals, plus a change of goaltender.  At 41:48, Ryan Campbell managed to pull one back for the Clan; James Jorgensen followed this up with a hooking penalty.  Two minutes later, fellow Clan member Jordan Krestanovich joined Jorgensen in the box, after drawing a tripping call.  This gave the Devils a 5-on-3 power-play, which they used to their advantage.  At 44:46, British Defensemen Mark Richardson netted the Devils' fifth and final goal.  In a last ditch attempt to pull back the game, Jordan Krestanovich added a second goal to the Clan's tally, at 53:18, just after the Devils had swtiched Lyle for Joe Myers.  Final score: Devils 5, Clan 2.

Next game is on Saturday, in Fife, FO at 7:15pm.  Can't make it up to Scotland?  Follow the guys here: www.the-inferno.co.uk/mnl  Let's Go Devils!

Saturday 1 October 2011

Cardiff Devils @ Braehead Clan 01/10/11

Devils 1, Clan 3 - Final

This first of October saw the Cardiff boys travelling to Scotland for their first match-up against the Braehead Clan.  The Clan are coming off a brilliant weekend, after winning their game on Saturday 6-0 against the Dundee Stars, and the Sunday game 4-2, against the Edinburgh Capitals.  On the other hand, the Devils are also coming off a four-point weekend, after defeating Hull 4-2 at the BBT, and shutting out Coventry, in the Skydome, with a 2-0 final score.

The game started with some intense end-to-end action, with both goaltenders getting closer to the puck than they would like.  Both teams also saw their fair share of offsides in the opening five minutes.  But, after about seven minutes of the first period, Frank the Tank showed us all that he isn't invincible.  After Scott Matzka was sent to the box for tripping, the Clan were trying to capitalize on their advantage, shooting shot after shot at the net.  Frank put his body in the way of a Clan shot and ended up taking a bite out of the puck; or, the puck to a bite out of him?  The defensemen was taken from the ice to get patched up, and play continued after the ice was cleaned.  But nothing could keep the Tank from the ice. He was back on just after Braehead scored their first goal, netted by Adam Walker at 12:59, unassisted.

Throughout the duration of the first twenty minutes, the Devils took a couple of penalties, all minor in some degree or another.  Unfortunately, the third power-play was just what the Clan were looking for, and they capitalized with the extra man, McPherson doubling their lead, while Kenton Smith was in the box for slashing.  Score at the end of the first, 2-0 Clan.

Devils were given a slight reprieve in the second, with less penalties being taken.  Most of the second twenty minutes were played with five men for both side, with the exception of a slashing call for Dobben and a holding call for Wedderburn.  Both teams through everything at the net, but this time the netminders were ready.  With shots coming at both ends, Lyle and Suomalainen, earning himself the MOM award, were pulling off some fantastic saves.  Second finished 2-0 Clan.

The start of the third saw some rough play, mainly centered around Lyle's goal area but nothing came of it.  In fact, nothing really happened for the first ten or so minutes of the third period.  There were hits made, but none that did any serious damage.  It wasn't until 49:34 that the box saw any actions.  The only Clan to get a penalty throughout the entire game, Tim Wedderburn spent two minutes in the box for interference.  During the power-play, the Devils' own Max Birbraer managed to pull them back within one goal, with the help of defensemen Kenton Smith and Mark Richardson, at 50:43.

Energized by the PP goal, the Devils found a new lease of life and gave everything to get the puck on the net.  Despite this, the Clan's netminder, Jaakko Suomalainen, stood strong between the pipes.  57:14 saw Tim Wedderburn back in the box, once again for interference, but Cardiff failed to use the advantage.  With 14 seconds left of the game, Braehead cemented their win with an empty net goal, after the Devils pulled Lyle, in hope that the extra attacker would help level up the playing-field.  Final score 3-1 Braehead.

Despite the loss tonight, the Devils will be gunning for revenge tomorrow night, as they face the Braehead Clan at home in the BBT.  FO is at 6pm, make sure you are there to support the guys.  Let's Go Devils!

Cardiff Devils @ Coventry Blaze 25/09/11

Devils 2, Blaze 0 - Final

It's that time again, and the Cardiff Devils are in Coventry tonight, showing the Blaze that preseason was just a warm up.  Coming off a win against the Hull Stingrays last night, Devils are out in force and raring to go!  As of last night, we have power-house forward Max Birbraer back, but we are also missing Luke Piggot, as he is back with the ENL Devils tonight, who are taking on the Bracknell Hornets at the BBT.  Speaking of the BBT, some people have been saying it is looking a little empty these days.... you should see the Skydome!  Compared to the Skydome, it would seem like the BBT is turning people away!

The first period finished scoreless in Coventry, with end-to-end play throughout the period.  Both teams have seen some excellent goal-tending, both from Stevie Lyle and from Coventry's Peter Hirsch.  Equal to that, we have also seen some incredible shots from opposite ends of the ice, the puck hitting the pipes several times.

As well as big saves, we have seen big hits, most coming from Canadian giant Brad Voth.  He has put many players on the ice, in addition to taking a few hard checks himself.  The period has seen only three minor penalties, two of those going to Cardiff -causing a 5-on-3 for Coventry, although they failed to capitalize- both for hooking.  Going into the second, both teams were looking for that opening goal.

And, just over seven minutes into the second, player/assistant coach Scott Matzka managed to get Cardiff on the scoreboard, with an nice set up from Jeff Pierce and Max Birbraer, who is playing like he was never away. Chances came for both sides, as Coventry tried to level the score.

The second twenty minutes saw a couple of interesting penalties, with the Blaze side trying to get Cardiff forward Brad Voth fired up, with little success.  Both Bryan Jurynec and Mike McClean had go, dropping the gloves to try and entice the big enforcer but Voth just didn't want to know, which is strange for number 26, who isn't unfamiliar to dropping the gloves.  Saying that, Voth has yet to drop 'em this season, although he has had plenty of opportunity.  Anyway, we also saw a slash from Cowley and a cheeky trip from Batch.  Second finishes with Devils 1-0 up.

Going into the third, it was all or nothing for the Coventry Blaze, who, having not won a game in the challenge cup, were desperate for those two points.  Unfortunately, despite playing good hockey for most of the game, the Blaze could not get past the wall of white blocking the Cardiff goal.  The man himself, Stevie Lyle, gave a show stopping performance all night long, earning himself a shutout and the man of match award.

Whilst Lyle held strong at one end of the ice, the Cardiff forwards were working hard to solidify the win.  With shot after shot going towards the net, the Devils were determined.  Blaze tender, Peter Hirsch, remained solid for most of the third, even after getting a skate to the helmet when one of his defensemen came hurtling towards him.  Despite his brilliant performance for most of the night, the Dane couldn't stop Brit Sam Smith from adding his name to the score sheet and the game finished 2-0 Devils.

Both teams played exceptionally well and it was a great game to watch, whether you were in the Skydome or watching the webcast.  Next game is on Saturday, up in Scotland, where the Devils take on the Braehead Clan, who have had a fantastic start to the season.  If you can't make it up there, be sure to follow along on http://www.the-inferno.co.uk/mnl/.  Let's go Devils!

Cardiff Devils vs Hull Stingrays 24/09/11

Devils 4, Stingrays 2 - Final

It's Saturday night, and we all know what that means!  Down at the BBT, the Cardiff Devils host the Hull Stingrays.  Coming from mixed results last weekend, the Devils were out to prove something.  After a 4-2 win, the Devils banked those precious two points.

Things started out slow in The Tent tonight, with the First going past scoreless.  Both teams came close many times.  Max Birbraer, fresh from an injury, was hitting the pipes all through the period, with Captain Stuart MacRae not far behind him.  The third line, consisting of Sam Smith, Scott Dobben and Ben Davies, were on fire throughout.

After a scoreless twenty minutes, and an additional fifteen for the intermission, the Devils came out ready for anything.  Gunning to be the first on the scoreboard, the Devils through everything they had at the Stingrays' goal.  Up until 1:39 in the Second, the Stingrays' goaltender, Christian Boucher, had remained solid, but after many attempts, Devils managed to get one through, coming off the stick of Brad Voth, with the help of Phil Hill and Stuart MacRae.

For most of the period following the Devils' first goal, Boucher held the Cardiff forwards back, keeping them from doubling the lead.  It wasn't until just under five minutes before the second intermission, that Scott Dobben managed to finally double the lead.  Score after two periods, 2-0 Devils.

Now, this is when the game starts to heat up.  It's almost like the Hull management gave the Stingrays a real talking to.  And the pep-talk seemed to have worked.  It wasn't long after coming out of the locker rooms, that the Stingrays managed to pull one back.  There were even a few roughing calls made, the penalties going to both sides, making the game a little more interesting.

But that didn't seemed to be enough, as, just five minutes after Hull managed to close the gap on the Devils, Cardiff opened up that gap again.  The third Devils' goal came from number 12, Scott Dobben, his second of the night and part of the reason he was awarded the Man of the Match award.  Cardiff now on a roll, young Brit Ben Davies, who had been close to scoring all night, added the fourth and final goal for the Welsh side, the assists going to fellow Brit Sam Smith and MOM Scott Dobben.

In a last ditch attempt to level the score, with about four minutes left of the game, Hull shot one at the net and managed to beat Stevie Lyle to get one final goal.  Final score Devils 4, Stingrays 2.

Be sure to follow along with tomorrow night's game in Coventry, on http://www.the-inferno.co.uk/mnl/, if you can't get up to the game.  Good luck, boys; Let's Go Devils!

Cardiff Devils @ Sheffield Steelers 18/09/11

Devils 3, Steelers 5 - Final

Coming off a 4-0 victory over the Steelers last night, everything seemed right for the Cardiff Devils tonight. Heading up to Sheffield with high hopes for a four-point weekend, everyone was excited.  With the Wales Rugby Team beating Samoa this morning, it was destined to be a Welsh Weekend; unfortunately, not everything could go our way.

As they have for the last few games, things started out well.  1:49 in the first period, young Brit Ben Davies set fellow Brit Sam Smith up with an incredible pass, and he put it in the back of the net, giving the Devils a 1-0 lead earlier on.  The first continued with many chances for both teams, and several minor penalties for both teams.  Despite a couple of power-plays, the Devils couldn't extend their lead, but also managed to fend off the Steelers on the few power-plays they got, Stevie Lyle making some amazing saves.  First period ended 1-0 Devils.

The second saw the Steelers hit back with two goals of their own.  Their first, both in the period and in the game, was scored by new Player/Coach Ryan Finnerty, with the second coming from Clark five minutes later, making the score 2-1.  But the Devils weren't beaten yet.  Just over two minutes after Clark slid one past Lyle, Phil Hill, who had a great night last night after netting two of the Devils' four goals, broke away whilst shorthanded and managed to lift the puck past DeCaro.  With the score now level, both teams were fighting for that extra goal.  Luckily for the Red Army, it came off the stick of Devils' Man of the Match, number 93, Jeff Pierce.  Second period finished 3-2 Devils.

In came the third and out went the Devils.  Leading the game 3-2, all the Devils had to do was hold on for twenty minutes.  And they did a good job of trying for the first twelve.  Unfortunately, at 52:07, Jason Hewitt equalized for Sheffield.  With their luck turning, the Steelers were on a roll.  Despite the Devils' defense trying their hardest, and doing well for the most, Mike Ramsey also slotted one passed Lyle, just over a minute after Hewitt.  For the last seven minutes, Cardiff tried their damnedest to get through the Steelers' defense and passed DeCaro, but unfortunately DeCaro was a brick wall!  Just to round off the night, Steelers' RW Ramsay added a second to his tally, whilst the Steelers were shorthanded.  Final score Devils 3, Steelers 5.

Despite the score on the board at the end of the sixty minutes, the Devils are definitely playing better.  Two points is better than none.  Next game is on Saturday, back at the BBT, where the Stingrays will be coming to town!  Turns out we may even have Max back!  Let's Go Devils!

Cardiff Devils vs Sheffield Steelers 17/09/11

Devils 4, Steelers 0 - Final

The boys are back!  After being shot out in the shoot-out  last weekend, the Devils sure did show the League what they are made of tonight!  With former captain Ryan Finnerty back in the BBT with his new team, the Steelers, it was sure to be an interesting night; it definitely didn't disappoint.

From penalties to goals, fights to saves, this game had it all.  From earlier on it was clear that the guys in red meant business.  For most of the night, every Devils' fan in the BBT was on their feet.  Just three minutes into the game, power forward Phil Hill started the ball, or puck, rolling.  With the help of Canadian Brad Voth, Hill managed to give the Devils a one-goal lead.  The next ten minutes saw a couple of minor penalties, before the Devils hit out again.  The second goal, also scored by the British silver medalist Phil Hill, came in the twelfth minute of the first period.  After a couple of interference penalties on Sheffield, Cardiff soon found themselves on another power play.  Thankfully, after a couple of extra practices last week, the guys have got their PP skills back up and took advance of their extra players.  Third goal came from number 93, Jeff Pierce, at 19:46 in the first.

While the first period saw the majority of the goals, the second saw the first of the interesting penalties.  After witnessing former-Devil Ryan Finnerty have words with new signing Scott Dobben in the first, everyone knew this would be a physical game.  With Voth not having dropped the gloves yet this season, it will only be a matter of time.  Unfortunately for all fans who wanted to see the two toughest guys in the league go at it, Voth stayed clear of the fighting majors tonight, although he did get a few hard checks in through the night.  No, in tonight's game, it was all about Frank the Tank.  And let's just say that Frank was tanking it out there on the ice.  Him and the Steelers' King both got five minutes majors in the second, although the fight did not look over by any means.  Not evens ten minutes later, they were both back in the box, after dropping the gloves for a second time in the second.  No goals came in the second, so the period finished 3-0 Devils.

After dominating the first forty minutes, the Devils were not going to let anything get in their way.  With their lead already at three, the Devils sought to get just one more to cement the victory.  Their wish was granted at 43:01, when Brad Voth slid a fourth and final goal past DeCaro.  Final score: Devils 4, Steelers 0.

Collecting the much needed two points has put Cardiff back on track, and Brad Voth collected the Devils' MOM award.  All in all, a great night for the Red Army.  Let's hope that Wales don't disappoint tomorrow morning.  Next game is tomorrow night, up in Sheffield, for the rematch!  Check it out on http://www.the-inferno.co.uk/match-night-live/ from 4pm (face-off at 5pm).  Let's Go Devils!

Cardiff Devils vs Belfast Giants 10/09/11

Devils 3, Giants 4 - SO Final

It was Hockey Night in Cardiff tonight and it was sure to be a good one, with the Belfast Giants coming to town.  With both recent transfer Jon Pelle and our very own Max Birbraer out with injury, it was certain that both teams would struggle a little without key players on the ice.  Despite this, both teams managed to accumulate three goals and fought their way through three regular periods, one overtime period and a shootout.

Unfortunately, shootouts are not a Devils’ strong point and Belfast came away with the extra point.

With it being the ten-year-anniversary of 9/11 on Sunday, the BBT was silent for two minutes prior to the singing of the national anthem, but this extra time seemed to get the Devils pumped up extra tight, because, just short of a minute in, up-and-coming Brit Sam Smith shot the puck into the back of the net.  New import Jeff Pierce, who had a tremendous game last Sunday, netting two of the four goals against the Panthers, followed Smith’s lead, and doubled the Devils’ lead to two.  This put them 2-0 up before two minutes of play had even passed.

However, not wanting to feel left out, the Giants pulled it back to a one goal game, when Craig Peacock shot one passed Lyle.  The Devils’ own giant, Canadian Brad Voth, obviously didn’t like this, as he came back with the Devils’ third goal, at 13:48 in the 1st.  To round off the 1st, Matzka got himself ten minute misconduct.

Now the 1st may have seen an onslaught of goals, the 2nd brought an onslaught of penalties.  Everyone knows that Cardiff is the tallest, and most probably the heaviest, team in the league and they weren’t afraid to use their size tonight.  Whether it was coming from Voth who, at 6’5”, is intimidating to just stand next, or Smith, who doesn’t usually dish out the hits, the Giants will definitely have some ice-shaped bruises in the morning.  Some were even self-inflicted…

With Belfast getting a goal halfway through the 2nd, the score was 3-2 going into the 3rd, which served to be one of the calmer periods of play.  Most of the handbags were thrown in the 2nd, so everyone was now focused on getting that extra goal.  Unfortunately for Devils' fans, the goal came for the Giants, when Garside pushed on passed Lyle.  Due to neither side being able to get a lead in the last few minutes, although both sides came pretty close, the game went into overtime.

Just like throughout the rest of the game, the overtime period saw penalties and near chances, but nothing played out for either team.  Finally, it came down to the shootout.  Belfast shot first, missing, with our own Captain following in the same.  The next two shooters, one Giant and one Devils, both missed.  Scott Matzka stepped up and had his saved by Murphy.  Coming up for his second shot, the Giants’ Douchet managed to post one in the back of the next.  If our final shooter failed to score, it was game over.  And, boy, did that fat lady sing when MacRae’s shot missed its target.

But never mind, there’s always next time.  Next game is next Saturday, when former captain Ryan Finnerty returns to the BBT with the Sheffield Steelers.  Let’s Go Devils!

Sunday 4 September 2011

Cardiff Devils vs Nottingham Panthers 04/09/11

Devils 4, Panthers 1 - Final

Just like we all knew they would, the Devils served the Panthers their just desserts tonight.  Revenge was sweet with a 4-1 final score, and the Panthers left buried in the boards were just a bonus.  From the great defence to the aggressive forwards, Cardiff were a completely different team.

Although the first period ended scoreless, there were definitely some incredible plays made by both teams.  At both ends, goaltenders Stevie Lyle and Craig Kowalski made some spectacular saves, with lightening fast gloves and pads, each earning themselves the corresponding man of the match award.  Mark Richardson, number 17 for the Devils, demonstrated excellent defensive manoeuvres, using his body, stick and skates.  As with the defensemen, the forwards were definitely playing a different game.

Unlike in last night's game, when he was described as timid, Phil Hill was one of the most aggressive players on the game, earning several trips to the penalty box.  Also showing his somewhat aggressive nature was Canadian Brad Voth, who traded insults with Panthers' player Guillaume Lepine, who had been the thorn in Voth's side for most of last night's game as well.  Although Devils' fans were spared from the refereeing of Mick Hicks for a second straight night, there were some unjust penalties called throughout the first.

The second saw the need fro the twine in the back of the net.  With three of the five total goals being scored in the second, it was starting to heat up.  The first goal of the night came off the stick Panthers' number 5, David Clarke.  But, in light of the defeat handed to the Devils last night, they weren't going to let the rivals get too far ahead.  Little over a minute later  saw Devils' number 8, Tim Burrows, bury the puck in the back of the net behind Kowalski.  With just over 10 minutes left in the second, new signing Jeff Pierce sent the puck into the twine to double the Devils' lead.

With the boys 2-1 up at the end of the second, there wasn't a Devils' fan in the Tent without a smile on their face.  These gleeful smiles turned to full out grins when another new Devils' signing, Scott Dobben, added yet another goal.  Jeff Pierce finished the night off with his second, with just 2:39 left in the game.

So with a win under their belts and a smile on their faces, the Devils saluted their fans before leaving the ice.  The next match is against Belfast on Saturday 10th September, at the BBT.  Let's Go Devils!

Saturday 3 September 2011

Cardiff Devils @ Nottingham Panthers 03/09/11

Devils 1, Panthers 6 - Final

The season is finally upon us, and the Devils kicked off in spectacular fashion… with a spectacular loss.  It was the theory circling the Red Army that, although we knew this opening weekend would be hard, this would be a chance to show that we can better the Panthers despite what the playoff final demonstrated.  Unfortunately, we haven’t got off to the best of starts.  With over three hundred fans making the long, tedious journey up to Nottingham, it was definite that everyone was excited to see the team play.

With the Devils in black, we knew they meant business.  Despite missing number 23, Max Birbraer – thought to be due to a possible injury sustained in Wednesday’s preseason game against Coventry-, the team looked strong at the start; also missing from the bench was bench coach Neil Francis, who was served with a match penalty at the end of the playoff final.  Additions to the line up came in the form of Adam Harding and Luke Piggott, who played in the 7-3 defeat to Coventry on Wednesday.

With the Panthers making two early trips to the penalty box, both before a minute had past, the boys in black were dominating the game.  With newly appointed Captain Stuart MacRae coming extremely close, forward Sam Smith put the Devils ahead with a goal at just 2:20 into the game.  From then the Devils stayed strong, even when coach and assistant coach, Gerad Adams and Scott Matzka took penalties within seconds of each other.  The Devils managed to hold the Panthers back and successfully killed both penalties.

With the Devils’ lines taking a new form, everything started to go a bit haywire.  We are used to seeing Voth with Hill, but tonight Voth played with Burrows and Davies.  Phil Hill was even described to be looking a little timid throughout the night.  Although I don’t personally think so, some people could put the first, if not all the Panthers’ goals down to the unfamiliarity of the Devils’ lines.  But for whatever the reason, the Panthers came back with a goal of their own at 9:53 of the first period.    The second came at 16:00, on the power-play.  The first period ended 2-1 Panthers.

In the second period, the Devils’ defense was all over the place, with the forwards not far behind.  On the power-play we got no shots and on the power-kill we conceded too many.  We were able to fall back on the amazing skills of goaltender Stevie Lyle for a while, most fans hoping that things would pick up, but it was only a matter of time before Stevie folded.  Third Panthers goal came at 30:55 on the power-play.

During the second, it looked like the Devils might be able to pull it back a little.  Just before the third Panthers goal, Jeff Pierce broke away towards the net.  Now, unfortunately for Devils’ fans, Mike Hicks was refereeing the game, and when Pierce was tripped from behind during his breakaway, Hicks called slashing and sent him to the box, instead of giving Pierce a penalty shot.  If anyone was at the Cardiff/Nottingham game at the BBT in February, then you will know what it feels like to witness a game refereed by Hicks.  This game was no different.  Before the second period ended, Beauregard of the Panthers, who scored the second goal for the home team, managed to extend their lead to 5-1, gaining himself the two goals needed for a hat-trick.

Despite the quality of play throughout most of the first two periods, the Devils started the third strongly.  For most of the last 20:00, both teams played an end-to-end game, with not much happening.  However, despite the pick-up in play for the Devils, they were not able to hold back David Clarke from adding a final sixth goal to the tally, leaving the final score at 6-1 Panthers.  Man of the match for Cardiff was number 17, Mark Richardson, with Jordan Fox getting the award for the home team.

Hope anyone travelling back from the game has a safe trip.  The Devils play the Panthers at the BBT tomorrow night, puck drop at 6pm, and it is sure to be an interesting game… especially due to the change in referee!

Pittsburgh Penguins vs New York Islanders 02/02/11

Penguins 3, Islanders 0 - Final

If you had the choice, would you choose a shutout or a knockdown?  We all know what Penguins goaltender Brent Johnson chose when playing the New York Islanders.  He was all set for a shutout when he dropped the gloves with fellow goaltender, Rick DiPetro.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves.  That did not come until seventeen seconds before the end of the game.  The first period held a different kind of excitement for Pittsburgh fans, the kind that comes when goals are scored.  The 'Burgh was lucky to witness two goals in the first.  It was on the power-play when the Pens got their first up on the scoreboard.  A nice wrist shot from Tyler Kennedy was all that was needed.  A few minutes later, the Pens were celebrating their second goal of the night, a back hander off the stick of Chris Kunitz.  This goal also saw Paul Martin's second assist of the night so far.  The first period also saw the likes of Mike Rupp, Konopka and Schremp gracing the penalty boxes, each with two minutes for Roughing.

Although no goals were scored the excitement of the first was carried in to the second, in the form of penalties.  At 2.37 in the second, Pens' and Islanders' fans alike got their first taste of blood, with Mike Rupp and Konopka bashing heads.  There were also a few other minor penalties throughout the second twenty minutes but nothing of great importance.

And then to the third we go' this period had it all!  Goals, penalties and fights.  The first nineteen minutes were nail-biting for Pitt fans, as they watched with baited breath to see if the boys could defend their two-goal lead.  But they need worry not.  Although he isn't the Penguins' starting goaltender, Brent Johnson was immovable between the pipes.  Defending shot after shot, Johnson was rewarded for his hard work when Max Talbot, with the help of Craig Adams, scored an empty-netter, bringing the score up to 3-0.  Everyone thought it was over.

Silly us.  With just under twenty seconds remaining in the game, Johnson and DiPetro decided they wanted to dance.  The dropping of the gloves was in response to a hit on forward Matt Cooke, which was completely unnecessary.  With the goaltenders fighting, and everyone else pushing and shoving, it was an interesting last twenty seconds.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs Los Angeles Kings 10/02/11

Penguins 2, Kings 1 - OT Final

Three goals, two fights and an overtime win; that’s what you would have got if you ventured down to the CONSOL Energy Center last night.  Just proves that even without our two main forwards, the Penguins can still pull out the wins.

The first period was the goal period.  Both regulation goals were scored in the first twenty minutes, although only one came of a ‘burgh stick.  At 6.53 in the first, Brett Sterling – a call-up from the Baby Pens of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton - let loose a wicked snap shot.  Putting us ahead with the help of teammates, on the Pens and the Baby Pens, Dustin Jeffery and Nick Johnson, Sterling showed that he was definitely worth the call.  However, just over ten minutes later, the noise of the CONSOL was quietened only slightly by the equalizing goal, from Kings’ forward Jarret Stoll.

Although the regulation goals had come and gone, the second period did not disappoint.  To follow up from Sterling’s snap shot, at 7.38 Deryk Engelland also let loose… with his fists.  It turns out Kevin Westgarth rubbed our defensemen up the wrong way, and came out worse for wears.  But the Baby Pens weren’t going to let the Pens have all the fun.  At 13.12 in the second, Ryan Craig dropped the gloves with Wayne Simmonds, proving that even the call-ups could tough it in the rough world that is the NHL.

Now I bet you’re thinking, what could the third period have that could top the first forty minutes?  A hat-trick?  An all-out brawl?  Maybe even a goalie fight?  But unfortunately not… no goals, no major penalties, just some wicked shots from both teams.  Although the Kings were out shooting them, the Pens weren’t going down without a fight, managing to hold on until the end of regulation.

Even with blood, sweat and tears –from the Kings- the Pens just couldn’t capitalize on any chances they got.  But instead of giving up, they continued to fight.  And, in the end, their fighting paid off.  At 4.41, after just coming back from an injury that has had him out for the first half of the season, forward Jordan Staal shot the puck at the net and scored his fourth goal of the season, with the help of number nine, Pascal Dupuis.

Looks like that even without captain Sidney Crosby, or alternate Evgeni Malkin, the Pens just keep winning…. With the help of those precious Baby Pens of course!

Pittsburgh Penguins @ New York Rangers 01/02/11

Penguins 4, Rangers 3 - SO Final

Despite their record in the big apple and missing so many key guys, the Pens managed to grab two points in a 4-3 SO win in New York.  With captain Crosby missing his tenth game due to a concussion and alternate Malkin missing his fourth, Penguin fans everywhere can breathe a sigh of relief and know that the boys can still win!

It was a tense game throughout, with the Pens rallying from two-nil down in the second to end the period drawing three-three.  With Prust scoring the only first period goal and Anisimov doubling the score just over a minute and a half into the second, it wasn't looking good for the boys in white.  But they didn't give up.

At 5.30 in the second, Dustin Jeffery started the night with a nice slap shot, on a 4-on-3 power-play... that'll teach Prust to mess with Engellend and Newbury to keep his elbows to himself.  Five minutes after the Burgh's first goal, Mike Rupp followed Jeffery's example and snapped one into the back of the next.  A few minutes later, Chris Kunitz tipped the puck into the net for Pittsburgh's final goal of the night.  The score was 3-2 with five minutes left in the period; if only they could hold them off and defend will in the third.  Unfortunately, in the last minute, Ryan Callahan blasted one into the back of the next, on the power-play after Jordan Staal was served a match penalty for a punch to Brandon Prust.

The third period paled in comparison to the second, being goalless.  Although there were a few minor penalties - 2minutes to Dupuis, Letang and Dubinsky for various offenses - not much else to report on.  The OT period also failed to keep the audience engaged with no goals and no penalties, everyone was now holding their breath for the shootout.

As per usual, the Pens' first shooter was Kris Letang.  Unfortunately his shot was saved Lundqvist (who managed to save 23 of 26 shots).  Rangers' first shooter was Wolski and the Flower (who also stopped 23 of 26 shots against him) had no problem stopping it.  The shots kept coming, either being stopped or missing the net completely, until round seven, when Dustin Jeffery stepped up to the plate.  With Lundqvist failing to block his shot, the pressure was n for Gabrik to score.  But he was not match the Pens' tender.  Final score 4-3 Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs New York Islanders 25/01/11

Penguins 1, Islanders 0 - Final

And they just keep rolling.  Second win in a row for the Pens, without the two-headed monster that is Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.  Both Sid and Geno have now officially pulled out of the All-Star Game, puck drop 7.30pm on Sunday, and have been replaced.  So now we're down to two Pens on the All-Star Roster; but, if this game is anything to go by, then we have still got two strong players representing us.

Marc-Andre Fleury, who is predicted to be one of the first tenders to be drafted by the All-Star Captains on Friday night, stopped an incredible 29 shots from 29, earning himself the 1st star, and, some might say, more importantly his 18th career shutout!  Let's go Flower!  Down at the other end of the ice, the Islanders' goalie, Poulin, managed to get himself the 2nd star, with 30 saves from 31 shots.  Poulin was lucky to be playing at all; he would have been back in the minors, had it not been for Nabokov getting suspended for failing to report to the Islanders, after being claimed on waivers.

Although the first period was scoreless, it was definitely exciting.  Within the first thirty seconds, we had seen our first fight of the night.  Tyler Kennedy, not someone who we usually see dropping the gloves, got into a little rough 'n' tumble with the Islanders' No. 36, Travis Harmonic.  Everyone knew it was going to be a physical game, but who could have predicted that the guys would start throwing their weight around so quickly?  But that wasn't the only fight of the period.  At 1.53 - only one minutes, twenty-six seconds after Kennedy got down and dirty - Arron Asham was going at it with Zenon Konopha.  What has gotten into these guys???

With more scratches, although we did have Ben Lovejoy back, it is amazing we are playing so well; but what do you expect from the Pens.  This game was the fifth win in six games, all without Crosby, who has missed nine games altogether now.  But then again, the Islanders haven't won in Pittsburgh since the December of 2007.  So we kinda had the advantage...

And we put that advantage into full effect, in the third.  After a relatively dull second period (especially after the first two minutes of the first), Penguins came out in the third, ready to win.  And win they did.  At 8.35, nearly half way through the third, Asham shot the puck at the net, only to have Poulin get a pad to it.  Unfortunately for the Islanders, Poulin wasn't as lucky with the rebound.  The puck had presented itself at the stick of Craig Adams, after rebounding off Poulin's pad; the Pens No. 27 didn't waste the opportunity.  With an open net, Adams had an easy slot, giving Pittsburgh the lead.

The rest of the game past without incident, earning the Black and Gold team the two points.  We're still behind the Cryers but we won't be for long.  So Pens, rest up over the All-Star Break, cheer on Flower and Letang, and come back refreshed and ready to win!

Pittsburgh Penguins @ New Jersey Devils 20/01/11

Penguins 0, Devils 2 - Final

There's not much I can say about this game.  We are near the top of the league; they ARE at the bottom.  Anyone guess the outcome?  Think we won?  You would be wrong if you did.  There's not much I can say about this game.  An infuriating game for all Pens fans.

So, do you want the good before I bring more details about the bad?  Yes?  Okay then.... Brent Johnson got a game between the pipes, with Marc-Andre Fleury as his back-up (although that isn't so good for the Flower).  We also got a little excitement in the 3rd, from Maxime Talbot.  He landed himself five minutes for fighting, after landing a couple of solid punches on Tim Sestito; but if this was an effect to rally the Penguins, as the Superstar is known to do, it came a little too late.

The funny thing about this game, the Pens had plenty of time to level out the score.  The two Devils' goals came in the first period; at 1.22, from Rolston, and at 9.51, from Palmieri.  The Jersey tender, Martin Brodeur (1st star) - who I adore, when he isn't playing the Penguins! - achieved his fourth shutout of the season, and his 114th career shutout; that is an NHL record!

Looks like Penguins aren't the strongest team in the League of late.  We had just gotten used to playing without Crosby, then Malkin's out.  But from the sounds of things, they will have to get used to playing without their two star forwards, as it is uncertain when they will be returning to the line-up.

We'll see if Pittsburgh can pull it out of the bag against the 'Canes on Saturday.... we can only hope that Jordan Staal wants to beat his brother, Eric Staal (Captain for the 'Canes), enough to get us a win!

Pittsburgh Penguins vs Carolina Hurricanes 22/01/11

Penguins 3, Hurricanes 2 - Final

Staal vs Staal.  It was all about Jordan Staal and his older brother, Eric, on Saturday night.  With no Crosby, who is now definitely missing the All-Star Game on the 29th due to a concussion, and no Malkin, who is out with a sore knee and sinus infection, the weight of the team fell onto the shoulders of Jordan Staal, who had to fill in as No. 1 Centre - not that he had any problems with the against his brother.

Although he didn't score, Jordan Staal managed to achieve his fourth assist of the season and attained the second star. Of course, not even the brilliance of Jordan Staal, or the Staal vs Staal rivalry, can take the first star away from Marc-Andre Fleury.  Saving 24 shots out of 26, the Flower was on fire between the pipes.  We couldn't have asked for a better tender; no wonder he is going to the All-Star Game!

Now, don't hate me for this next comment; it's a good job Geno Malkin isn't fit enough to play at the moment.  If he was, then Bylsma wouldn't have called Dustin Jeffrey back up from the minors, and he wouldn't have scored!  After a scoreless first period, Jeffrey opened the scoring at 17.14 in the second, with the help of Brooks Orpik.  Without Crosby, it was tough; Sid the Kid is definitely one of the guys that makes this team.  But we have learnt to function without him.  Then, Malkin is out.  For the second time since Malkin joined the franchise - the first being against the Devils on Thursday - the Pens have been without both of their world-class forwards.  And we didn't do so well without them against the Devils; but we're learning... quickly.

The second period ended 1-0 Pens; question is, can we keep the lead?  Of course we can.... was there ever any doubt?  2.22 into the third period, Mark Lestestu doubled the Penguins lead with his tenth of the season.  No. 10 gets ten!!!  Cause for celebration if ever they were!  Can you imagine if someone like Wayne Gretzky scored as many goals as the number on the back of his jersey, in one season?  That would be a lot of goals...  But anyway, Lestestu managed to get us our first powerplay goal in four games, with the help of Kunitz and Letang.  It was about time we were due one.

With the momentum rolling, Pittsburgh wouldn't give up a chance to add another to their running total of the night.  So, when the puck presented itself to Pascal Dupuis, 5.06 after Letestu doubled the lead, he wasn't really going to miss, was he?  Getting assistance from No. 1 centre Jordan Staal and Defenseman Paul Martin (who now has fourteen assists), Dupuis was cementing our win.

That is until it all went downhill.  At the beginning of the third, Fleury was all set up for a shutout.  He has yet to get one against the 'Canes this season, although Brent Johnson manage to attain one when he met with Carolina back in October.  Even after Letestu scored, Marc-Andre was still solid in between the pipes.  With No. 9 making it 3-0 Penguins, you could practically smell the shutout in the air.

But then it happened.  Or rather, Sergei Samsonov happened.  At 15.35 in the third, the Flower faltered for a single second; but that was just enough time for Samsonov to slip the puck past him.  So, now it was 3-1.  Not that bad, right?  Still got a two goal lead?  Not for long.

It seems like the Carolina players have got confident.  It took a couple more minutes, but in the last minute of play, the 'Canes Captain-and Jordan's brother-Eric Staal, managed to slip one past, making the 3-2.  Although [Eric] Staal did diminish his goal, when he received a 10 minutes misconduct penalty, dead on 20.00.  He just managed to worm his way out of that one... unfortunately.

So with a win under our belts, Penguins remain in 2nd in the Atlantic division, with 64 points; Flyers' are just ahead in 1st, with 69 points.  And for anyone who is excited for the All-Star Game, they have announced the Alternate Captains; for Team Lidstrom: Chicago's Patrick Kane and the fabulous Martin St. Louis.  For Team [Eric] Staal: Ryan Kesler, the American who should be Canadian, and the Caps' Mike Green, who we all hate to love.  Anyone else rooting for Team Staal?  Just me?  Okay then...

Pittsburgh Penguins vs Detroit Red Wings 18/01/11

Penguins 4, Red Wings 1 - Final

Where to start!  The Pens are back and they are raring to go!  Three wins in as many games and all without our glorious captain, Sid the Kid.  The face of the NHL, who is out with a mild concussion, has missed the last six games, the first three going 0-1-2, and is rumored to be missing the All-Star game in Raleigh on January 30th.

But if Crosby is anything like Jordan Staal, he will be fine when he gets back.  Staal, who missed the first thirty-nine games of the season due to injury, looks like he has never been away.  He opened the scoring just 3.02 into the game, shooting the puck into an open net, after receiving a pass from Tyler Kennedy who was situated behind the goal... with Joey MacDonald, the Wings' goaltender!  MacDonald, suiting up instead of Jimmy Howard (who is also out due to injury), made the mistake of going behind the net to collect the puck, but had his pocket picked by Kennedy, who achieved both his fourteenth and fifteenth assists of the season, all in one night - he also managed to pick up the third star of the match.

If you're a Pens fan and you were watching the game, you got to witness a real treat!  Eight minutes after Staal opened the scoring, Chris Conner was held on the breakaway, by Kris Draper;  Conner was given a penalty shot.  I know what y'all are thinking; penalty shots and Penguins don't go together... and that would be a justified statement.  We haven't scored a penalty shot since 2007, when Ruutu played in Black and Gold.  But that's the past, and this is now.  Skating down the right side, Conner successfully tricked MacDonald into thinking he was going to us the forehand, before expertly switching to the backhand and slotting the puck between the pads, earning him the second star of the night.  2-0 Penguins!

To the second period now, and the Wings are rallying to stay in the game.  At 17.28, Johan Franzen, scoring his twentieth goal of the season for Detroit, managed to slip one past Fleury, although not affecting his overall performance - which landed him the first star of the night!  Let's go Flower!

Although not stealing it completely, Chris Kunitz managed to take some of Marc-Andre's spotlight, by restoring the Pens two-goal lead - just thirty seconds after Franzen had shortened it!  Evgeni Malkin and Pascal Dupuis got a share in the awesomeness that was Chris Kunitz' goal, both getting assists.  But the Pens weren't done; an empty-netter from Matt Cooke, who was assisted by Tyler Kennedy and Brooks Orpik, finished off the scoring for the night.

It had been clear at the begging that the Pens were in this to win, and weren't going to show the injury-ridden Wings' team any compassion... I'd bet good money that the Pens are glad that they are back to winning ways, even with Crosby and Ben Lovejoy out for the moment.

Let's just hope they carry on winning against the Devils on Thursday!  Let's go Pens!
